Initial Thoughts

The mood board here shows my initial thoughts into what brave new world could mean. My initial thought about body modification went to piercings and tattoos because this is the most frequent way in which we modify our bodies in the name of art. After looking through images to see how people alter there bodies, I found that there are a lot more ways to create an alternative body. Take the image top right of the mood board, the forehead has been altered using implants under the skin to alter the face shape. This can be created a using special effects makeup. The look of implants under the skin may look familiar because of Lady Gaga and the music video 'Born This Way', in which Gaga has added pieces to the face to change the shape and profile. These were inspired by the artist ORLAN, who underwent live surgery as an art piece when her implants were inserted.

From the images above, it is clear to see where Lady Gaga got her inspiration from. The alteration of the face shape creates interesting results, creating something futuristic. Perhaps this could become fashion in later years to come? Researching into Orlan has made me realise that there are many more ways in which to change your body. Many fashion houses have added pieces to the face to make their product stand out. Daryl Von Wouw 2011 Amsterdam Fashion week, Alex Box and Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010 have all used pieces to recreate what the norm of the human ideal is.

Daryl Von Wouw used glue on studs down the centre of the face. This created contrast over the face and has created a different texture to break up the skin. The look is very subtle compared to other artists but is a simple way to change the appearance.

The next artist is Alex Box. Here Box has used small circle pieces on the skin to create this futuristic effect. The circles could be created using lentils and then simply sprayed this silver colour. The pieces around the neck create a snake skin texture. The whole piece alters the face, taking out the eyebrows creates a blended effect as if the circles are a second skin. The pattern follows the structure of the face, down the bridge of the nose, around the brows down to the cheekbones, in turn creating a line for the eye to follow ending at the apple of the cheek where colour is found. The idea of following a structure and altering it using texture is a interesting take on what body modification is. Therefore, body modification doesn't just have to be the adding of art or metal, it can be based around texture. Texture that we see in everyday life.

Once again the face shape has been altered around the eye area, across the cheek bones and down the nose. Taking out the brows creates a fresh look face with the attention placed on to the structure of the face. The texture of the skin is smooth, completely neutral to allow for the alternative structure to stand out. 'Last Show' slowly filtered the new face shape into the show with more models walking out with altered shapes as the show went on. The idea was to create a different being by the end and for the audience to see the process of how the being has evolved.
